The Hospital Bag: A Must-Have for Any Health Scare

Having a hospital bag prepared before a hospital stay is required can be a game changer in reducing stress during a health scare. I really wish I had thought about needing a more long-term stay when Dot was born and been better prepared for the unexpected, and I wasn't. Here are some things I've learned along the way so you can be better prepared than I was for a longer hospital stay.

Whether it's a planned surgery or an unexpected trip to the emergency room, being organized and having all the necessary items in one place can make a big difference in your peace of mind.

One of the main benefits of having a hospital bag ready to go is that it allows you to focus on your health rather than worrying about packing and gathering items at the last minute. If you're in a rush or feeling overwhelmed, it's easy to forget important items or to pack things that may not be necessary. By having a pre-made hospital bag, you can ensure that you have everything you need and that you won't have to worry about forgetting anything important. We call ours the 'Go Bag'. Something you can grab out of your closet or even keep in your car for when emergencies arise.

Another advantage of having a hospital bag is that it can help you feel more in control during a stressful and uncertain time. When you're facing a health scare, it's natural to feel anxious and out of control. Having a hospital bag can give you a sense of preparation and control, which can help you feel more calm and focused.

So what should you pack in your hospital bag? Here are some essential items to consider:

  1. Insurance information and identification
  2. A list of your medications and allergies
  3. A copy of your advance directive (if you have one)
  4. Comfortable clothing and shoes
  5. Personal hygiene items (toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, shampoo, etc.)
  6. Any necessary medical equipment (such as a CPAP machine or insulin pump)
  7. A phone charger and any other electronic devices you may need
  8. A change of clothes for after your hospital stay
  9. Snacks and beverages (if allowed by the hospital)
  10. A notepad and pen for taking notes or communicating with healthcare providers

It's also a good idea to have a designated person (such as a spouse or family member) who can help manage your hospital bag and ensure that it's ready to go in case of an emergency. This person can also help with any tasks or errands that need to be taken care of while you're in the hospital.

Having a hospital bag prepared before a hospital stay is required can be a valuable tool in reducing stress and helping you feel more in control during a health scare. By packing all the necessary items in one place, you'll be better able to focus on your health and recovery, and you'll have one less thing to worry about. So, it is always better to be prepared before the emergency strikes.
