Vintage Flipping: How To Find Vintage
Hi y'all! I hope everyone's having a lovely day out there!
I made a video this morning over on Instagram, detailing my top 5 tips for finding vintage when you're shopping.
I've included the video here, but for those of you wanting a very quick rundown - here are my top 5 tips for finding that amazing vintage to resell.
1. Look for dates or years, especially on printed T shirts. If it's a graphic shirt and it does not have an actual printed label on the inside look around the border of the graphic on the front of the shirt for a year.
2. Look for patina on items. If something is showing its age, that might be a good indication that it's vintage. A lot of people looking for vintage want something that looks its age, so do not clean all of that beautiful patina off of the piece that you just bought to resell. Give it a good wipe down and get that baby listed!
3. Beware of "vintage inspired" pieces. Simply because something looks vintage, does not necessarily mean that it is vintage. A lot of companies make vintage inspired pieces, but are actually brand new. Looking inside and outside of the item is going to be a very good indicator if it is new or older.
4. Chose quality over quantity. You can find Milk Glass in a million thrift stores - because it was super popular and everyone had it. I don't have much luck reselling items like this for a good markup. There's simply too much of it to make it worth anything, unless you find a very rare piece.
5. If you are looking to buy vintage to resell, as in not for personal use, avoid antique malls. Antique malls have the same type of stuff that you want to buy, which seems like the spot to shop, right? I say no. Remember that all of these items have already been sourced, cleaned, inventoried. Therefore items at antique malls will cost you retail price. You're not going to be able to buy something from an antique mall, mark that up a considerable amount, and resell it because you are already buying it for retail price.
๐Bonus Tip๐ My biggest tip when buying vintage to resell is to buy stuff that you like. If you think it's interesting and something cool that you have not necessarily seen 1,000,000 times before, this is probably a good indicator to you that you could flip that item and sell it pretty easily.
